Brush Drop-Off Site Opening For The Season
April 7, 2015

Hours are: Tuesday from noon to 7 PM, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM-3 PM.
Acceptable materials include: brush, branches, grass clippings, leaves-$5.00/cubic yard or $1.00/bag. Untreated construction wood- $8.00 cubic yard, Pallets-$1.00 each, stumps .50/inch up to 18″ diameter. Non-acceptable materials includes dirt, sod, concrete and stumps/branches greater than 18” in diameter. Please separate your grass clippings/leaves from branches/twigs.

Free Compost
April 18, 2015 (Saturday) 8:00 am to noon, (or until gone) Self serve, self haul compost is yours FREE at the Sara Hardy Farmers Market parking lot (Cass and Grandview Parkway), courtesy of the City of Traverse City & Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery (RecycleSmart). Bring your own shovel and container. Pick up a free Eastern White Pine seedling, courtesy of Traverse City Light & Power (L&P). The
compost and seedlings will be available beginning at 8 a.m. until they are gone.

Clean Out Your Files Week
April 17 – April 24, 2015 This is a no cost opportunity for businesses to dispose of unwanted paper material. American Waste will be donating the use of a recycling container at the Sara Hardy Farmers Market parking lot at the corner of Cass & Grandview Parkway. Accepted material includes newspapers, magazines, cardboard, old files, office paper, and unwanted mail. This container of material will not be shredded. Clean Up and Green Up
April 26, 2015 RecycleSmart staff will be assisting the Michigan Green Consortiums “Clean Up and Green Up” recycling event to be held April 26, 2015 from 9 am to 3 pm at the American Waste Recycling Facility, 280 Hughes Drive, Traverse City. RecycleSmart Household Hazardous Waste & Pesticide Collection

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY RESOURCE RECOVERY DEPARTMENT (RecycleSmart) will conduct the spring Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) & Pesticide collection on Thursday, March 26 from 1:00 to 6:45 pm.

The online scheduling system is a convenient and the recommended tool to secure an appointment. An appointment is required and can be made at www.RecycleSmart.info
or by calling the RecycleSmart Hotline at 231.941.5555.

This service is provided to Grand Traverse County residents at no cost, (up to 150 lbs., $1.30 lb. thereafter). Accepted material includes cleaning products, pesticides, mercury, moth balls, motor oil, pool chemicals, oil based paint, latex paint, CFL bulbs and more…

Bay Area Recycling For Charities, 2014 Take It Back “Recycler of the Year”

Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery (RecycleSmart) announced Bay Area Recycling For Charities (BARC) as the 2014 Take It Back “Recycler of the Year”. BARC will be formally recognized and a plaque presented at the Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners, Resource Management & Administration committee meeting to be held Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 6 pm. Meeting location is the Governmental Center, 400 Boardman Avenue, Traverse City, 2nd floor Commissioner Chambers.

Each year a local business is selected to receive the Take It Back Recycling Program “Recycler of the Year” Award for their commitment in assisting Grand Traverse County residents reduce, reuse, and recycle materials that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill.

Six years ago founder Andy Gale established Bay Area Recycling for Charities, a non-profit (501(3), offering comprehensive waste management services and compostable products for your home, business or event.

BARC accomplishments include:

  • Opened new recycling facility during 2014 located at 1732 Barlow St., Traverse City.
  • Accepts electronic devices that ‘plug in” or runs on batteries (Cell phones, Computers, TV’s, VCR’s, etc…)
  • Provides unique recycling solutions for difficult items such as used vegetable oil and bed mattresses.
  • Consistently provides updates to Resource Recovery staff for the Take It Back recycling program.
  • Promotes composting solutions rather than landfill alternatives.
  • Assist Resource Recovery staff in promoting RecycleSmart department programs and goals.

Introduced by RecycleSmart staff in 2008, the “Take It Back” recycling program is a convenient product return infrastructure, where consumers can return unwanted products for reuse, recycling, or proper disposal. The program has grown to 106 products listed with 64 participating local businesses.
